Child marriage is any formal or informal union between children ages below 18 and an adult or another child.
One in five girls are currently experiencing this practice worldwide or estimating up to 10 million more girls are at risk of becoming child brides caused of the impact of the pandemic. This practice is part of entrenched gender inequality. Consequently, this worsens economic and health outcomes since it affects the child’s education, increases childbirth, and isolates girls from their family and friends which affects their physical and psychological well-being, which brings major implications for the country’s development and prosperity.
